Aircon Steamwash in Singapore: What It Is and When You Need One
A steamwash is the deeper clean that sits between a routine service and a full chemical overhaul. High-temperature steam reaches into the cooling coil and fins to lift grime and kill the mould and bacteria a normal wipe-down can’t reach — and it does it without dismantling your unit.
In Singapore’s heat and humidity, that hidden build-up is exactly what causes the musty smell when the aircon switches on, slowly weakening cooling, and rising electricity bills. A steamwash tackles it at the source.
We’re an authorised dealer for Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, and Midea, and we steamwash all brands of split-unit aircon across Singapore.
What is an aircon steamwash?
A steamwash uses pressurised, high-temperature steam to clean the inside of your indoor unit — the cooling coil, the fins, and the blower fan — while the unit stays assembled on the wall. The heat does two jobs at once: it loosens and flushes out grime that’s settled deep between the fins, and it sanitises, killing the mould and bacteria that cause smells and affect the air you breathe.
It’s more thorough than a routine wash, but far less invasive than a chemical overhaul. Nothing is taken apart, no harsh chemical solution is used, and the unit is back in service the same visit.
What a steamwash does for your unit
- Clears the smell at its source — the musty or sour smell on start-up is mould and bacteria; steam kills it rather than masking it.
- Restores cooling and airflow — a coil clogged with fine grime can’t transfer heat properly; clearing it helps the unit cool the room faster.
- Helps your electricity bill — a clean coil lets the unit hit temperature sooner and work less hard to hold it.
- Better air quality — less mould and dust circulating, which matters if anyone in the home has allergies or sensitive lungs.
- Gentle on the unit — no dismantling and no harsh chemicals, so it’s a lower-risk deep clean done in a single visit.
Steamwash or chemical overhaul — which one?
If you’re weighing a deeper clean, these are the two real options. The simple rule: a steamwash refreshes a unit that’s slipping; a chemical overhaul recovers a unit that’s gone too far.
| Steamwash | Chemical overhaul | |
|---|---|---|
| Method | High-temperature steam, unit stays assembled. | Unit dismantled; coil and parts soaked in chemical solution. |
| Best when | Faint smell, slightly weak cooling, or you just want a deeper clean than routine. | Strong smell, badly clogged coil, persistent leaking, or long neglect. |
| How deep | Reaches grime and mould a surface clean can’t, without disassembly. | The most thorough — dissolves deep, hardened build-up. |
Not sure which your unit needs? Tell us the symptoms and we’ll advise honestly — or read the full detail on the chemical overhaul page. For routine upkeep that comes before either, see aircon servicing.
How often should you steamwash?
A steamwash is not a replacement for regular servicing — it sits on top of it. Keep up your routine general servicing through the year, and add a steamwash about once every one to two years, or sooner if you start noticing a smell or weaker cooling. Homes with pets, heavy use, or anyone with allergies tend to benefit from the shorter end of that range.
Signs your unit is due for a steamwash
- A faint musty or sour smell when the aircon first switches on
- Cooling that’s slightly weaker than it used to be, even after a recent service
- Visible grime or darkening on the fins behind the front cover
- More dust in the room, or allergy symptoms that flare when the aircon runs
- It’s simply been a year or two of steady use since the last deep clean
Most of the build-up a steamwash removes is invisible until the unit is opened up.
